Nrqed in Bound States: Applying Renormalization to an Effective Field Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
This is a pedagogical introduction to NRQED, a nonrelativistic approximation to quantum electrodynamics. It can be made to reproduce QED to any degree of precision when applied to nonrelativistic systems and is particularly powerful when applied to bound states. We will begin by explaining what makes bound states so special, and so difficult to treat using QED. We will then develop the most näıve nonrelativistic approximation of QED which will be shown to fail when applied to a simple example (hyperfine splitting in positronium). We will see what was missing to make the theory well-defined, and the resulting theory will be, essentially, NRQED. We will conclude by discussing what makes NRQED so much more powerful than QED in nonrelativistic bound states, and what the approach we followed can teach us about “new physics” beyond QED.

Effective field theories for QED bound states: extending Nonrelativistic QED to study retardation effects
Nonrelativistic QED bound states are difficult to study because of the presence of at least three widely different scales: the masses, three-momenta (pi) and kinetic energies (Ki) of the constituents. Nonrelativistic QED (NRQED), an effective field theory developed by Caswell and Lepage, simplifies greatly bound state calculations by eliminating the masses as dynamical scales. As we demonstrate...
متن کاملEffective Field Theory for Ultrasoft Momenta in NRQCD and NRQED
Two particle non-relativistic bound states in QCD (QED) have, at least, three well separated scales: the mass m (hard scale), the typical relative momentum |~ p| (soft scale) and the typical bound state energy E (ultrasoft scale). This allows to introduce a hierarchy of effective field theories when sequentially integrating out each of these scales. After integrating out the hard scale m QCD (Q...
متن کاملHigher order corrections to bound state energy levels in QED: an effective field theory approach
In [1], a new method was developed to calculate energy levels in QED nonrelativistic bound states, up to order mα5 (or α3 with respect to the Bohr levels). Whether or not this method could be used beyond this order was left as an open question. In this paper, we answer this question with the help of a nonrelativistic effective field theory, NRQED. This theory permits to deal separately with bou...

In this paper, we calculate Hydrogen hyperfine splitting (HFS) at the order a4 by using NRQED as an effective field theory. We also show the leading-order contribution of nuclear size to the energy correction of Hydrogen atom .
متن کاملNonrelativistic Bound States in Quantum Field Theory∗
Nonrelativistic bound states are studied using an effective field theory. Large logarithms in the effective theory can be summed using the velocity renormalization group. For QED, one can determine the structure of the leading and next-to-leading order series for the energy, and compute corrections up to order α ln α, which are relevant for the present comparison between theory and experiment. ...
